(DR) stopped by STS Arms in Oregon yesterday on his way to the 2012 NDIA Joint Weapons Conference, Expo and Shooting Demonstration in Seattle to drop off some weapons (ARs and other weapons) for a coating (Cerakote ceramic), one of the company's products specialties. STS coats the interior with Micro Slick, a permanent dry lubricating ceramic coating that greatly reduces or even eliminates the need for wet lubrication. STS owner Ron Downs then took us to the range for a little shooting session with some of his weapons, including a Custom Tactical SBR AR (STS Arms) (short barrel rifle) chambered in 300 AAC Blackout, full- .22 LR AR auto and resistance, a Glock 22 (G22) semi-auto/full-auto pistol equipped with a prototype STS Arms backplate/backplate fire selector switch reminiscent of the FSSG Fire Selector System, upon which DR wrote some time ago. In fact, the STS Arms backplate toggle switch appears to operate identically to the FSSG and differs only slightly in physical appearance and materials. The backplate of the STS Arms fire selector for Glock pistols appears to be all steel, while the FSSG, originally invented by Mr. Jorge A. Leon from Venezuela and holder of US patent US5705763, incorporates an impact resistant graphite polymer. How the STS backplate circumvents the FSSG patent, or if it does at all, is anyone's guess. It sure is fun. It's really great, sorry for the pun. So how does it work? For normal semi-automatic shooting, make sure the button type selector is pushed all the way to the left so that it protrudes from the left side and is flush with the right side. To enter rock'n'roll/full-auto mode, simply push the button from left to right so that it pops out fully on the right side. Like the FSSG, the STS Arms Glock Backplate Selector replaces the standard Glock Backplate and can be swapped from one Glock to another just as easily. The first video below (top video) is my second attempt to fire fully automatically with a G22 pistol equipped with an STS Arms backplate after getting used to its firing characteristics.
