During an operation near Cua Viet, Vietnam, on 28 February 1968, LCU 1500 hit the port side of the conning tower, instantly killing one crewman and injuring five. Almost a year later, on 27 February 1969, while loading ammunition at the bridge ramp, Da Nang, Vietnam, an enemy missile struck a nearly loaded ship, killing 13 sailors of ACU 1. Seven sailors aboard the nearby YFU-78 were also killed, and also three sailors who worked on the ramp. LCU 1500 was badly damaged and subsequently delisted from the Navy.

The United States Marine Corps traces its roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775. That date is celebrated as the birthday of the Marine Corps. Throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, Marine detachments served aboard Navy cruisers, battleships, and aircraft carriers. Nearly 600,000 Americans served in the US Battles in the Pacific theater saw fierce fighting between the Marines and the Imperial Japanese Army. The Battle of Iwo Jima is arguably the most famous naval engagement of the war with high losses of 26,000 American and 22,000 Japanese casualties. By the end of World War II, the Corps had expanded to a total of approximately 485,000 Marines. Nearly 87,000 Marines were casualties during World War II (including nearly 20,000 dead), and 82 received the Medal of Honor. The Korean War saw the Corps expand from 75,000 regulars to a force of 261,000 Marines, mostly reservists. 30,544 Marines were killed or wounded during the war.
