Assault Craft Unit One - A wreath-laying ceremony was held at Naval Air Station Coronado, Calif., on May 27 to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the landing of landing craft (LCU) 1,500 during service in Vietnam.
"ACU 1 is ready and will be ready to respond to the challenge," Lee said. "It is only right and appropriate during this important holiday weekend that we stop, pause and honor our fallen comrades and shipmates at Naval Beach Group."

"ACU 1 has a long and incredibly proud history, and we must remember how its roots were laid and be custodians into the future," said Cmdr. Tiffany Check, Commander, ACU 1. "It is an honor to serve on a team built on such greatness."
During an operation near Cua Viet, Vietnam, on 28 February 1968, LCU 1500 hit the port side of the conning tower, instantly killing one crewman and injuring five. Almost a year later, on 27 February 1969, while loading ammunition at the bridge ramp, Da Nang, Vietnam, an enemy missile struck a nearly loaded ship, killing 13 sailors of ACU 1. Seven sailors aboard the nearby YFU-78 were also killed, and also three sailors who worked on the ramp. LCU 1500 was badly damaged and subsequently delisted from the Navy.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was held with a limited number of guests, team and staff. The event was streamed live on Facebook for those unable to attend in person.
